Making your shed look nice on the outside: tips and tricks

Making your shed look nice on the outside: tips and tricks

Is your shed looking a little dull from the outside? No matter how much you decorate the indoors to look pretty and cosy, the outdoors can affect the overall feel of your shed and bring down the appearance of your garden.

Whether you don’t like the colour or you feel like it’s missing a little something, it doesn’t take much to brighten up your shed or make it look more interesting. To show you how easy it is, we’ve created a guide to making your garden shed look nice on the outside with a few tips and tricks.

Soon enough, you’ll be relaxing in your back garden, enjoying the view of a very beautiful and intriguing shed— one that adds to your garden rather than putting a damper on it.

1. Fresh paint

This might be a no-brainer, but sometimes a quick paint job can make a shed look brand new.

Whether that’s improving the colour that’s already on it or giving it a fresh, new colour, it can add vibrancy and health to revive a shed that’s seen better days.

If you want your shed to look soft and blend well with your garden, then pastel colours like butter yellow, mint green, and baby blue will evoke a tranquil vibe. This will make plants and shrubs in your garden pop, serving as the perfect backdrop.

For those who want to make a statement out of their shed, opt for bold colours, like hunter green, deep blue, or red. Not only does this draw attention to your shed, but these colours can make your shed seem further away, making a smaller garden appear bigger.

2. Outdoor lights

Yes, cosy lighting is all well and good inside your shed, but what about the outside?

By strategically placing a few beautiful lights around your shed, you could bring it to life during the night, perfect for summer nights outdoors.

You could add spotlights to the walls to illuminate this feature or install solar-powered lights as an eco-friendly option for late nights. If you want to add details to the outside of your shed, why not add some wall sconces? (with bulbs suitable for outdoor use, of course)

For a magical touch, drape fairy lights around the roof of your shed, the windows, or porch; it’s an easy and cost-effective way to make your shed look nice on the outside.

3. Add a decking area

If your shed is missing something, adding an attached decking area will undoubtedly bring out the feature, making it larger and more functional for the summer.

You can use wooden pallets to add an outdoor deck to your shed. In the summer, place some chairs and a table for sitting outdoors. To make it functional during winter, add a roof to shelter you from the rain.

This could serve as the perfect reading spot or a lovely place to eat breakfast on a sunny morning. Add a few potted plants or garden ornaments, and you’re good to go!

4. Replace old doors and windows

Sometimes, the best solution is to change key elements of your shed, like replacing weathered doors and windows.

If a fresh coat of paint can’t save them, maybe it’s time to admit defeat and try something new. You can purchase shed windows and doors online, with a variety of options to choose from, depending on your style.

If you want something rustic, go with ledge-and-brace timber, or choose something with glazed panels to let in extra light. You can paint the doors and windows the same colour as your shed or choose something bright, like white, pink, or orange, for a unique edge.

5. Install bird feeders

Does your garden feel a little dull and quiet? Some nature may be what’s missing.

By adding bird feeders to the outside of your shed, you can attract more wildlife to the garden, allowing you to connect more with nature from your home.

Place bird feeders outside near windows so when you’re sitting in the shed, you can get a close-up of your little visitors. Sunflower hearts, peanuts, and fat balls are crowd-pleasers for robins, blue tits, and finches alike.

You can even add birdhouses in unique and quirky shapes for a fun touch.

6. Create a green roof

Do you lack space in your garden for a vegetable patch or plants? If so, why not make the most of your shed roof?

Creating a green roof allows you to add more nature to your garden while insulating your shed AND attracting more wildlife. It’s a 3-in-1 deal! Plus, it’s super easy to do, and it makes your shed that much prettier.

All you need is some soil, a waterproof membrane, and some low-maintenance plants (think sedum, alpine plants, or even wildflowers). You can read our blog on how to create a green roof on your shed for the full breakdown.
